My Role: UX Design Consultant
Challenge
The US Coast Guard needed a landing page that would allow users to easily view relevant and interesting information about the Coast Guard. The home page should also allow users who were interested in enlisting or who had begun the enlistment process to, easily access their accounts via the existing portal. The portal allowed the users to track the progress of their applications well as submit any required documents. Previously, applicants were sent an email containing a link to the portal.
Research
Research Goal
My goal was to gain an understanding of the type of information users would want to see prior to enlisting. The information needed to be arranged and presented in a way the was easy to understand, easy to navigate and aesthetically pleasing to the user.
Research Methods
My research method included conducting remote interviews of the stakeholders who most interact with potential recruits. Due to security concerns, I was not able to speak to recruits directly. Instead, I conducted several remote discussions with recruiters and supervisors from the US Coast Guard.
Research Findings
Potential recruits were interested in learning about the types of activities and role as part of the US military.
They also wanted to know about the different roles and responsibilities they could have if they joined the USCG.
Users also wanted guidance in completing the required paperwork for enlisting which could be long and confusing.
They wanted to know what to expect after joining the USCG, particularly in what to expect during bootcamp.
Users also needed an easy way to access the USCG portal where they could track their progress, contact their recruiter and upload additional documents.
UI Design
In order to create a cohesive design, I utilized the Coast Guard’s existing style guides to ensure that the new home page would flow well with the existing website. A cohesive experience provides reassurance to the user that they are still within the USCG environment, which reduces confusion and engenders trust in the new home page and portal experience.
